New lobby in Naismith Hall is a hit
By Tom Quinlan | Sep. 16, 2013 | http://udkne.ws/167QNp1
Opened in 1965, Naismith Hall has housed almost 20,000 students over the years. This historic residence hall is looking to the future with major renovations. The privately owned residence hall has just received a major facelift to its first floor lobby.
The Bromley Companies, a New York-based real estate investment company, owns Naismith Hall. Bromley owns other student residence facilities at Colorado State, Texas Tech and Ohio University. Bromley has a reputation for updating residence halls to better suit student needs. This is the first part of a renovation process that will cost approximately $3 million. Construction on the lobby finished in August, just in time for its residents to move in for the fall semester. The lobby comes with plenty of features that residents of Naismith will enjoy.
“I’m really into the sleek modern aesthetic. I love the fireplace,” said Shegufta Huma, a freshman living in Naismith. At any given time you’re likely to see students congregating around the fireplace, which is an obvious favorite with many of those who live at Naismith. The straight, sharp edges complement the contemporary seating that surrounds the fireplace.
“I come down here no matter what time of night it is, I know someone who’s down here, hanging out. It’s very social,” said freshman Carly Aufdem-Brinke, who isn’t alone when it comes to the sense of community that the lobby gives Naismith Hall.
The new lobby is almost universally admired with an overwhelming appreciation for the many of the new features. Eli Finkelstein, a transfer student to the University, had no trouble identifying his favorite aspects of the common areas. “The pingpong table, brings people together and the sitting area, people like to come down and study.” The combination of academic and social features of Naismith’s new lobby will contribute to student success and satisfaction for years to come.

New fireplace lounge
New TV lounge with comfortable seating
New recreational areas including a pool table and a ping pong table
Private group study and conference rooms
A new computer lab with iMac, PCs, free printing and new high speed internet access

A new laundry room with machines that notify residents via text message when their laundry is done
A new community kitchen for residents to enjoy cooking and baking
Upgraded internet speeds and new, faster wireless service throughout the building
The design of the new amenity spaces and lobby areas transformed storage and aging lobby spaces into modern, comfortable areas for students to study, exercise, cook and socialize. “Our design for the renovation was modeled much more on an upscale boutique hotel than on traditional university dormitory layouts” said Dan Sabatini, principal of Sabatini Architects Inc. who designed the space. “We wanted to create some really unique spaces for Naismith residents that help foster a sense of community and provide a unique residential experience.”
“We were very excited to unveil the main floor renovations to our incoming residents that arrived in August who were thrilled with the new spaces”, said James Graham, President of the Bromley Group. “We are proud that Naismith Hall has housed over 20,000 University of Kansas Students over the years, and this significant renovation helps transform the building with all the latest amenities that current and future residents will enjoy for years to come.”
Since 1965, Naismith Hall has been one of the premier private housing facilities for students attending the University of Kansas, located on Naismith Drive near Allen Fieldhouse, home to the University of Kansas basketball team, and the new Ambler Student Recreation Center. Naismith Hall offers residents easy walking and bus access to the University’s academic and athletic facilities. Bromley purchased the property in December 2012 and is building on Naismith Hall’s past success.
Naismith Hall is the only residence hall on or off-campus that exclusively offers semi-private bathrooms with all student rooms. Naismith Hall also offers a comfortable dining hall, TV lounge, exercise room, laundry facilities and private swimming pool.
